Diversification of Rainfed Maize-Based Systems in the Indian Himalayas

Rainfed maize cultivation plays a pivotal role in ensuring both nutritional and economic security for the local communities in the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR). However, the existing mono-cropping practices, coupled with the challenges posed by climate change and resource constraints, necessitate a shift toward a more diversified and resilient agricultural system. Crop diversification approach not only mitigates the impact of climate uncertainties but also contributes to improved soil health through crop rotation. Furthermore, the inclusion of leguminous crops enhances nitrogen fixation, thereby reducing the dependency on external fertilizers, and making the system more sustainable and cost-effective for farmers. Nutritional security is a critical aspect addressed by diversification, as it ensures a more balanced and diverse diet for local communities. Economic security is another key dimension addressed by the proposed diversification strategy. Mixed cultivation of local cultivars, farmers can tap into different market demands, reducing the vulnerability associated with reliance on a single commodity. This approach aligns with broader goals of promoting food security, preserving agro-biodiversity, and fostering economic sustainability in the unique context of the IHR.
