Solar Energy for Farm Diversification: Implications in Sustainable Food Production

摘要

The energy sector is facing sustainability challenges along with increasing environmental concerns. Globally, the energy sector is transitioning from fossil fuel and electricity-based sources to cleaner and greener alternatives, such as solar energy. Implementing solar energy in agriculture not only reduces the carbon footprint but also provides a reliable power source, especially in remote or off-grid locations. Farm diversification is considered a key strategy for building resilience of the agricultural systems to changing climatic conditions and enhancing the income of farming communities worldwide. However, the diversification of farms through the inclusion of a variety of enterprises is energy-intensive. Solar energy, in both direct and indirect forms, can be harnessed to meet the specific energy requirements of these enterprises, leading to reduced dependence on conventional energy sources. Solar-powered applications like cooling, heating, and electricity production have shown enormous potential in diversifying Indian farms, making it feasible to include poultry, piggery, fishery, and dairy as part of mainstream agriculture. Adoption of greener solar energy will greatly facilitate the sprouting of small-scale agro-industries, fostering employment generation and poverty alleviation. Renewable sources can not only reduce the dependence on conventional fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas, resources, which are depleting at an alarming rate, but also decrease global greenhouse gas emissions. To fulfill the future requirements of modern sustainable agriculture, researchers, governments, and other stakeholders should focus on the development of innovative, affordable, and effective solar-powered technologies for the development of agriculture.
