Crop Diversification Opportunities in Rainfed Farming: Approaches and Strategies
摘要
Rainfed agriculture in India still constitutes 48% of the net cropped area and contributes approximately 40% of the nation’s food supply. The impacts of climate change and climate variability are felt across Indian agriculture, with rainfed agriculture being particularly vulnerable. The primary challenge is to sustain unirrigated and partially irrigated operational holdings by promoting sustainable intensification, ensuring stable productivity and profitability, and improving the livelihoods of small and marginal farmers. Crop diversification in rainfed regions is essential to enhance resource use efficiency, increase land productivity and profitability per unit area, mitigate various risks, create employment opportunities, improve farmers’ livelihoods, and ensure food and nutritional security. Traditionally, mixed or intercropping systems prevail in core rainfed areas, providing resilience against adverse weather conditions during the growing season. Therefore, adopting climate-resilient crop diversification strategies in rainfed areas is crucial for maximizing income and ensuring sustainable agricultural systems.
