摘要

Sustainable cultivation is recognized as a pivotal strategy to address the various crises confronting rural households in developing nations. In India, farming continues to be the basis of livelihood, providing nutrition, food, income, and employment to the majority of the rural areas’ population. In agriculture, one of the critical challenges is increasing yield without compromising its foundations such as a healthy environment, particularly soil health. Hence, there is an immediate necessity to pinpoint management practices that simultaneously support soil health and production, striving for environmentally sustainable agricultural systems. Crop diversification, an approach involving the cultivation of diverse crops within a specific area or region, has gained significant attention for its profound implications on food security and soil health enhancement. Adoption of crop diversification will reduce the incidence of crop failure and pest and disease infestation in monoculture systems while also improving soil quality and crop yields. Utilizing a diverse array of scholarly sources, empirical studies, and agricultural reports, the chapter seeks to clarify the pivotal role of crop diversification in sustainable agriculture and global food systems. Its primary objective is to comprehend the benefits, as well as the environmental and socioeconomic challenges, associated with the practice of crop diversification.
