RNA Interference for Plant Disease Management: Updated Methods, Current Applications and Future Directions

Plant diseases cause significant losses in crops and deteriorate the quantity and quality of the crop produced. Although there are traditional methods such as synthetic pesticides, cultural management, resistance varieties, etc. for managing plant diseases, these methods have their limitations. In contrast to synthetic pesticides, which have a detrimental effect on human and environmental health and promote pathogen resistance, RNA-based approaches to plant disease control provide an alluring alternative. Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) activates RNA interference (RNAi), a conserved process that silences certain genes. Small RNAs with a sequence of 21–30 nucleotides are generated during RNAi, and they influence the expression of genes in a sequence-specific way. The natural occurrence of cross-kingdom RNAi provides a basis for host-induced gene silencing. RNAi protects the host plants against diseases by silencing the pathogen’s target genes. This is an effective disease management technique. The use of RNA interference against numerous plant diseases is updated in the current book chapter.
