In the nineteenth century, linguistic typology centered on “morphological types.” This involved analyzing word-formation methods and categorizing the world’s languages into such types as isolating, agglutinative, inflecting, analytic, synthetic, and polysynthetic. In the twentieth century, linguistic typology shifted its focus from examining morphological types to the study of word order.
