Transcriptional Control for Metabolite Production

Plants synthesize secondary metabolites as a defense mechanism against microbial and herbivore assaults, as well as to shield themselves from UV radiation. Beneficial interactions with other organisms are facilitated by certain classes of metabolites. Anthocyanin pigments and terpenoids in essential oils play a crucial role in luring pollinators to flowers. Secondary metabolites have practical applications for humans. Flavonoids and terpenoids, along with other chemicals, provide beneficial properties when used as food additives, while certain alkaloids exhibit therapeutic properties. Cells in plants mainly regulate the synthesis of secondary metabolites through regulated transcription of biosynthetic genes. Several transcription factors that are involved in metabolic pathways have been discovered and investigated. It appears that both internal and external variables can affect transcription factors, resulting in controlled responses. The primary focus of this chapter is on transcription factors and how they regulate secondary metabolism in plants. The pathways leading to terpenoid indole and phenylpropanoid alkaloids have been the subject of extensive research. The discussion will go into the protein and genetic levels.
