Bioprocessing and Purification of Metabolites

Both primary and secondary metabolites form an essential component of the medicinal, food, chemical, and agricultural industry today. Extraction, purification, and other downstream processes are of great importance while developing such a product. A diverse array of techniques and methods are employed for the obtaining a metabolite of ideal qualitative and quantitative features. This chapter discusses the variety of separation and purification techniques that are employed for bioprocessing of metabolites as part of fermentation and downstream processing. By providing relevant examples, the chapter emphasized the use of strategies for the enhancing the purity, safety, and yield of metabolites. Metabolic engineering and synthetic biology and their integration in bioprocessing have also been provided. Toward the end, the quality control and regulatory aspects of bioprocessing of metabolites have also been shared. In general, the chapter provides a thorough inter-disciplinary insight into the bioprocessing aspects of metabolites.
