Current Approaches on Metabolomics

Metabolomics, the comprehensive analysis of small molecules (metabolites) present within cells, tissues, or organisms, captures dynamic biochemical changes and provides an immediate reflection of the physiological state. This introductory chapter outlines the scope and significance of metabolomics in biological and medical research, highlighting its applications in various areas. The chapter traces the historical development of metabolomics from early biochemical studies to the advent of advanced analytical technologies such as mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, which have revolutionized metabolite detection and quantification. Analytical techniques, including MS, NMR, FTIR, Raman, and UV-Vis spectroscopy, are discussed in terms of their strengths, limitations, and applications. Emphasis is placed on the importance of meticulous sample preparation, data acquisition, processing, and the role of bioinformatics and computational tools in metabolite identification and pathway analysis. This chapter also explores the diverse applications of metabolomics across clinical, environmental, agricultural, and industrial domains, supported by real-world examples. Addressing current challenges and future directions, the chapter highlights ongoing advancements in technology, integration of multiomics data, and the potential of big data and machine learning to further enhance the field of metabolomics, underscoring its critical role in advancing scientific understanding and improving health outcomes.
