In almost all developing countries of the world, the extension of urban areasUrban areas is a dynamic phenomenon over rural land resources. This chapter presents the results on the quantification of urban sprawlUrban sprawl dynamics and land resource utilization rate and absorption coefficient for Ghaziabad city based on Survey of India topographical maps of 1971, IKONOS satellite data of 2009 and 2014 of Ghaziabad city. The results show that in 1971, the built-up area of the city based on the SOI topographical map was 2737.62 ha. Based on IKONOS satellite 1 m spatial resolution imageries of 2009 and 2014, it is 16,363.40 ha in 2009 and 18,411.80 ha in 2014, respectively. Urban spatial growth and per annum growth percentage between 1971 and 2009 is 13,625.58 ha (13.09%) and 2009–2014, the growth in built-up urban areasUrban areas was observed as 2048.40 ha (2.50%), respectively. In time span of five years, from 2009 to 2014, a remarkable growth of 358.56 ha and 409.68 ha per annum has been observed during the period from 1971 to 2009 and 2009 to 2014 respectively. City extended toward the north-west direction along highways and major road corridors. The trend change between 2009 and 2014 has been observed as a remarkable decrease to −18.82% in agricultural land and an increase in built-up urban 105.89%, respectively. The land consumption rate and absorption coefficient between the period from 1971 to 2009 and 2014 are 0.015 ha and 0.009 ha, and 0.005 ha, respectively, and the land absorption coefficient is observed as 0.009 ha and 0.15 ha in the period of 1971–2009 and 2009–2014 respectively and for the period 2014–2021, it has estimated as 0.13 ha. The digital database generated for urban sprawlUrban sprawl dynamics and land consumption rate for Ghaziabad city would be very useful for urban planners/decision-makers for better land useLand use planning and managementPlanning and management of land resources for cities.
