Vulnerability and Coping Mechanism of the City Dwellers: A Study of Old Dhaka

About 29.7% of people lived in urban areasUrban areas in 2009 while it increased up to 38.2% in 2020. Along with facilities like job opportunitiesOpportunities, health careHealthcare, educationEducation, business, etc. city dwellersCity-dwellers also face multiple socioeconomic problems including povertyPoverty, lack of proper housing, pure drinking waterDrinking water and sanitation facilitiesSanitation facilities and many more. On the other hand, water, air and noise pollutionNoise pollution; traffic jam, and different types of disasters emerged as by-products of urbanizationUrbanization. Considering the gravity of the situation, the United NationsUnited Nation’s included SDG-11 (Sustainable CitiesSustainable cities and Communities) in its Sustainable DevelopmentSustainable development Agenda 2030. The government of Bangladesh has already taken measures for achieving SDG-11 and improving the overall conditions of urban dwellersUrban dwellers, especially in Dhaka city. It is important to know to what extent the residents of this city are resilientResilient to vulnerabilityVulnerabilities, and how they cope with the situation. A study is carried out at the Lalbag area of Dhaka South City Corporation using a qualitative approach for a better understanding of the situation. Data are collected by employing face-to-face interviews with a semi-structured interview schedule to address the research questions. Data are also collected through focus group discussion (FGD)FGD and non-participant observation to supplement the findings placed on the basis of face-to-face interviews. Thematic analysis technique is used to analyze the collected data. Verbatim of the research participants is also presented for a greater understanding of the situation that has affected them most. The findings show that the people of Old Dhaka experience some problems such as income insecurityIncome insecurity, problem with drainageDrainage, disruption of gas supplyGas supply, water loggingWater logging, fire outbreakFire outbreak, problems of movement, traffic congestion, water, air and noise pollutionNoise pollution, and so on that make them vulnerable to lead their daily lives. Accordingly, they adopt some indigenous mechanisms such as looking for alternative jobs, cooking early in the morning or night, abstaining from going outside during water loggingWater logging, being alert for fire outbreakFire outbreak and so on to cope with the situation.
