Türkiye with its repeated experiences of earthquakes, from 1939 Erzincan earthquake, 1992 Erzincan earthquake, August 1999 Marmara earthquake to the recent 6 February 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, has evolved its legislation over time, drawing the lessons from the major disasters. There have been updates and revisions according to the needs of the community and policy makers after each event. For instance, compulsory earthquake insurance (CEI), which was introduced following the devastating 17 August 1999 Marmara earthquake (aka Kocaeli/Gölcük/Adapazarı earthquake) is one of the key developments in the insurance sector of the country. CEI is strongly supported by the legislative framework. The chapter will highlight some of the key issues in the Building Code development, Municipality Laws, and financial mechanisms in this regard.
