In response to the 2004 Aceh tsunami, the Indonesian government issued Presidential Regulation No. 83/2005 establishing the National Coordinating Agency for Disaster Management. Following that, Indonesia has focused on disaster risk reduction. Furthermore, the government implemented Disaster Management Law No. 24/2007, followed by Presidential Regulation No. 8 on the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) in 2008. The legislation provides scope for establishment of disaster departments in local governments and identifies focal person for DRR (Disaster Risk Reduction) in the local level. Given the importance of understanding disaster legislation, the chapter will elaborate on some of the key aspects of disaster legislation in Indonesia.
