Many theories of learning have been promoted ranging from the relation of learning to memory and multiple intelligences, to behaviourism, humanism, cognitivism and constructivism. This chapter provides a brief review of major theories of learning and puts forward the view that learning is dynamic, where interaction of the knowledge and experiences we engage with mould our understanding of the world in which we live. Learning theories therefore need to address this moving framework as the existence and availability of information directly and indirectly affects how we find and use information and develops our understanding leading to creativity and innovation. We posit the value of behaviourism and training, humanism, goal setting and self-determinism, cognitivism and active learning, constructivism and constructionism, within a dynamic framework of learning. The chapter is written with particular reference to the domain of design engineering but has much wider applications possibly to the majority of learning contexts.
