This contribution is on statistical methods used by ethologists to analyze data on animal behavior. Methods applicable in ethology are not often covered by general statistical books. Workers in animal behavior now have several statistical methods and approaches to select for data analysis. Methods like capture–recapture, survey sampling, and trapping may not be used frequently under field conditions nowadays. Ethologists can find references to methods in journals like Animal Behavior, Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, Ecology, Indian Journal of Ecology, Journal of Wildlife Management, and American Journal of Primatology. Animal behavior presents some unique situations for data analysis that need to be addressed. Software programs are designed with versions for behavioral studies. Before implementing the study on behavior, the investigator ought to know the design of the experiment, observations, and what patterns of observations the data will contain, including the method of analysis.
