Unlocking the Potential of Constructed Wetlands for Sustainable Development: Some Case Studies Focusing on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the United Nations in 2015, provide a comprehensive framework to address global challenges and achieve a more sustainable future by 2030. Constructed wetlands (CWs), engineered ecosystems designed to mimic natural wetlands, have garnered attention for their potential to contribute to multiple SDGs. CWs have gained recognition as a multifaceted environmental management tool with the potential to contribute significantly to achieving several SDGs including SDG 6, SDG 11, SDG 13, SDG 14, SDG 15, SDG 17, etc. To conduct this study, the authors performed a systematic literature review through academic databases such as Scopus and Google Scholar. Keywords “constructed wetlands,” “sustainable development goals,” and “wetland ecosystem services” have been used to identify relevant studies published between 2010 and 2023 to capture recent developments in this field. This review examines key studies and discusses the potential benefits, challenges, and future directions of integrating CWs into the global agenda for sustainable development.
