Combustion, Performance and Emission Analysis of a Diesel Engine Using Alcohol Blended Diesels

Researchers have been striving to find alternative fuels to improve & advance the current emission norms. In this research work analysis of combustion, performance and emission characteristics of 12% volume by volume (v/v) of ethanol in diesel (E12D88) and 12% v/v of pentanol in diesel P12D88 is done, compared with base fuel D100. BTE for D100 > P12D88 > E12D88 and increased with increase in load. BSFC for D100 < P12D88 < E12D88 and reduced with increase in load. NHRmax,CPmax and MGT for all the fuel decreased with a reduction in load, with retarded crank angle after TDC (aTDC). NHRmax at full load for E12D88 > P12D88 > D100 but CPmax and MGT for P12D88 > E12D88 > D100. At full load MFB for D100, P12D88 and E12D88 were 51.36, 34.81 and 25.91, respectively up to 6°aTDC, trend remains similar with unloading. NOx emission for E12D88 was least at all loadings. CO and HC were least for E12D88 and P12D88, respectively and decreased with increase in loading. Performance and HC emission of E12D88 may be improved with small amount pentanol in it.
