BSFC Simulation for Field Test Data for Different Speed–Torque Load Cycles Using VECTO Engine-Only Mode

This study consists of engine simulation performed in the Vehicle Energy Consumption Calculation Tool (VECTO) for a 5.6 L OBD2 Cummins Diesel Engine conducted over several speed–torque load cycles generated from various field test data of a 1923 Tata-Motors Tipper truck. VECTO takes into account specific engine test data along with various factors that influence fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, including vehicle characteristics, weight, aerodynamics, axle configurations, rolling resistance, and drive train configuration for performing the simulations over the required speed–torque profile. It replicates real-world engine runs by using mathematical models and algorithms to calculate the fuel consumption and emissions of the specific vehicle for the required input load cycle. The accuracy of these inputs significantly impacts the simulation results. In this study 8 simulation runs were conducted in VECTO Engine-Only Mode, which is an infrequent extension of the Engineering Mode. The purpose of this study is to have a comprehensive notion of the capability and accuracy of this mode to be reliably used to simulate any speed–torque load cycle for industrial and research purposes. Output results of the simulations conducted with different inputs and route data conclude the capability of the tool to replicate fuel consumption with less than 10% deviations from field test run results.
