The objective of the study was to assess the environmental sustainability of flexible pavement along with its maintenance and rehabilitation strategies. The major scope of this study included the design of pavement, the formulation of maintenance strategies, and the estimation of environmental impact through Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. This study was carried out based on a life cycle assessment methodology to quantify the Green House Gas (GHG) emissions of flexible pavement in kgCO2eq. The assessment was conducted in the following phases: material production, material transportation, pavement construction, and pavement maintenance and rehabilitation. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of flexible pavement having a CBR of 5 and 7% was carried out to account for the design variables. Next, emission was estimated for 1 km long and 3.75 m wide flexible pavement sections. Study findings indicated that when superior materials, characterized by a 2% change in CBR were used in the subgrade, emissions were reduced by almost 16%. Among various stages, it was found that the emission was highest for the construction stage for both the pavement sections considered in this study. Overall, it was envisaged that this study would provide important insights to road agencies, policymakers, and other stakeholders to devise rational alternative strategies that help to develop a sustainable solution for flexible pavements.

摘要
