Scientific Crash Investigation: A Case Study of the Bus Crash at Vadakkencherry, India

Road crashes are a major concern in developing countries with mixed traffic patterns. Major accidents demand proper and in-depth scientific study to reduce crashes in future and generate sound recommendations. Future safe road networks are built on the foundation of scientific crash investigations. This case study dives into the examination of a crash that occurred in Vadakkencherry, Palakkad District, in the Indian state of Kerala. Two buses—one a government-operated stage carrier and the other a privately owned contract carriage vehicle—were engaged in the tragedy, which resulted in the death of nine people. Data gathered during the investigative stage includes CCTV footage from the incident site, driver backgrounds and past behaviours, eyewitness testimonies, on-site metrics like tire mark length, and Speed data of the vehicles involved. The development of an event tree, the identification of accident phases, the assessment of speed using tire mark analysis, and the evaluation of CCTV footage were all a part of the process. It was discovered that the collision was primarily caused by driver error and negligence. Other elements that contributed included the geometry of the road, issues specific to the location, problems with the vehicles itself, and incompetence on the part of various authorities.
