Planning of Ring Road Connecting the Suburbs—A Case Study

The major issue faced in urban centres is the through traffic between suburbs. This is mainly due to poor connectivity between suburbs. Passengers are often forced to cross or enter the city centre while travelling between wards in the suburban areas. Often, passengers have to rely on the transfer of routes to travel between these places. This transfer occurs at the city centre, leading to congestion in central business area. In order to tackle this issue, ring roads can be introduced. Circular route buses connecting sub-urban areas may solve the problem. A ring road goes around the boundary of a region so that traffic does not have to enter the city centre. Ring road connecting the suburban areas can reduce the traffic volume in the city centres and channelize unwanted traffic. The feasibility of the introduction of ring roads was conducted in Trivandrum district, in Kerala, the southernmost state of India which has a complex road network system. Data was collected to analyse the need for ring roads and circular route buses in the district. 89.1% of the respondents voted in favour of ring roads. Trial alignments were prepared considering the most preferred origin–destination using ArcGIS software. Three-ring roads—one outer ring road and two inner ring roads are proposed in the study.
