Road transport remains the predominant choice for both the transportation of goods and passengers in India. However, the escalating population, rapid motorization, and increasing urbanization have rendered people more susceptible to road accidents, leading to fatal, severe, and minor injuries, as well as fatalities. Notably, around 40% of road accident-related fatalities in India occur on two-lane rural highways. The safety performance of these highways is particularly crucial due to their relatively poor road geometrics and continuous traffic flow, contributing to a higher incidence of accidents with greater severity. Assessing road safety is challenging due to a lack of reliable data on accidents and the limitation that a few accident records may not always provide sufficient information to prevent future incidents.12 km length of road along Safe Corridor Demonstration project in SH1 in the State of Kerala is selected for the study. Before and after studies are conducted and blackspots are identified as per MoRTH guidelines. Reactive and proactive approaches combined to identify locations needing safety treatments and strict enforcements along the study stretch.
