Yellow River Delta

Originating from the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Yellow River stretches 5,464 km and drains into the Bohai Sea, encompassing a basin of 750,000 km2. As the river reaches the sea, large amounts of sediment are deposited near the estuary, forming new land. Since the last channel migration in 1855, over 5,000 km2 of land, known as the modern Yellow River delta, has been built. The Yellow River delta is crucial for flood mitigation, environmental purification, biodiversity maintenance, and socio-economic development. However, due to climate changes and human interventions, the delta faces significant challenges, including coastal erosion, land subsidence, wetlands degradation, and biodiversity loss. Engineering efforts such as the Water-Sediment Regulation Scheme and the Wetland Restoration Project have been implemented to support the delta’s sustainable development. Nonetheless, there is an urgent need for more cross-disciplinary research and policy advancements to address the adverse effects of global change on the Yellow River delta.
