摘要

Horticulture, as an expanding sector of agriculture, plays a vital role in the cultivation of diverse crops with high productivity but limited shelf life, necessitating their consumption in fresh form. Effective postharvest management is crucial to minimize losses and enhance the livelihoods of small-scale farmers. In order to address the significant issue of postharvest losses (PHL) in horticultural crops, on-farm processing and storage have emerged as effective measures for mitigating these losses. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the protocols employed to prevent decay in horticultural crops, specifically focusing on implementing necessary measures at the farm level to reduce PHL. The primary objective of this chapter is to enhance understanding of the technologies and interventions available at the farm level, which can effectively minimize PHL. By delving into the significance of horticultural crops, identifying factors influencing PHL, reviewing control techniques, and exploring potential solutions, this chapter seeks to contribute to the improvement of efficiency and sustainability in horticultural production systems. Furthermore, the chapter sheds light on the various challenges encountered in on-farm storage and processing. These challenges encompass a range of factors such as infrastructure limitations, capital constraints, technical knowledge and skill gaps, quality control and food safety concerns, limited energy availability, seasonal variations, weak market linkages, and complex policy and regulatory environments.
