Powering Tomorrow: Advancements in Energycane Breeding for Sustainable Bioenergy Solutions
摘要
Energycane, a hybrid of sugarcane and a wild species, is emerging as a promising bioenergy crop owing to its high biomass yield and adaptability across diverse environments. This chapter synthesizes advancements in energycane breeding and its applications in bioenergy production. Breeding programs exploit energycane’s genetic diversity to enhance traits crucial for biofuel production, including biomass yield, sugar content, disease resistance, and stress tolerance. Molecular breeding techniques, such as marker-assisted selection and genomic selection, expedite the identification and introgression of favorable alleles associated with bioenergy traits. Trait selection in energycane breeding prioritizes characteristics optimizing biomass accumulation, enhancing biomass quality, and facilitating efficient biofuel conversion. Furthermore, efforts are directed toward developing energycane cultivars tailored to various agro-climatic regions, ensuring adaptability and productivity across diverse environments. Targeted manipulation of metabolic pathways associated with biomass accumulation and biofuel synthesis could lead to the development of elite energycane varieties optimized for bioenergy production. Looking forward, future research directions encompass harnessing genomic resources for trait manipulation, optimizing cultivation practices for sustainable bioenergy production, and exploring novel biotechnological interventions to enhance biomass yield and quality. A holistic approach integrating breeding and biotechnology will be instrumental in realizing the full potential of energycane as a renewable bioenergy feedstock, contributing to the transition towards a sustainable and carbon-neutral energy economy.
