Environmental Applications and Emerging Pollutants: Monitoring and Remediation Techniques

Emerging pollutants (EPs), also known as micropollutants, have been a major issue for the global population in recent years as a result of the potential threats they bring to the environment and human health. Several ECs such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), antibiotics, hormones, and flame retardants that are used in great demand for health and cosmetic purposes have rapidly culminated in the emergence of environmental pollutants, that are directly or indirectly discharged from hospitals, agricultural, industrial, and other sources to the environment. EPs impact the environment in a variety of ways. EPs originate from animal or human sources, either directly discharged into waterbodies or slowly leached via soils. In the face of evolving industrial practices and urbanization, the environment faces the challenge of emerging pollutants that threaten ecosystems and human well-being. The monitoring and remediation of these novel contaminants require innovative and adaptable techniques. This comprehensive review explores the environmental applications and emerging pollutants while emphasizing the monitoring and remediation methods that are currently in use and under development. We delve into cutting-edge technologies, including advanced sensor systems, analytical methods, and remediation strategies, which are essential for detecting and mitigating these emerging pollutants. The importance of a multidisciplinary approach and the integration of sustainable practices are underscored as critical components in safeguarding environmental quality and human health.
