microRNAs as Cogent Buttons for Mediating Drought Stress Tolerance in Plants
摘要
Drought stress hampers plant’s entire life and over the past several years, numerous efforts have been made towards the improvement of crops, mostly using traditional or modern breeding approaches. Over the last few decades, the domain of molecular biology has flourished and made it possible to understand the various genes required to achieve desirable plant traits under different environmental conditions. Noncoding RNAs are one of the most important regulators of gene expression discovered in recent times and playing a gear shifting role in plant growth, development, and stress response. Expression profiling of drought responsive microRNAs have been reported in different plants and functional characterization of microRNAs and targets showed the significant role in drought stress mitigation. Therefore, in this chapter, we have summarized and presented the role of plant microRNAs in response to drought stress in different crops. We have also highlighted some of the alternative promising strategies for drought stress tolerance.
