Closing and Reopening—Another Round

After nearly a century of connecting the southern part of the globe with the northern one, the Suez Canal was blocked. It remained so for the next eight years, to 1975. The Red Sea ceased for a while to be a most important, strategic, international artery.1 In the year the canal was blocked the British left their old colony of Aden, in the other edge of the sea.
