In the previous chapters, the choices between introvert and extrovert layouts will lead to changes in lookout points, thus influencing the views of the landscapes from a specific standpoint. In the Chinese language, the phrases “Guan Jing” (观景) and “Jing Guan” (景观) consist of the two same characters but in reverse order. The former conveys an act of watching something from a specific standpoint; while the latter means the object (landscape) is to be viewed from various perspectives. In short, they refer to the act of viewing and the object to be viewed. In the design of classical gardens, most scenic spots—including buildings and rockeries—must take into account the requirements of both.
