Chapter Seven focuses on the staging and chronology of archaeological cultures in the Tumen River basin. According to the stratigraphic relationship revealed by the Wudong site in Hoeryong city, North Korea, and the archaeological findings from this region, the ancient cultural remains in the Tumen River basin dating from the Xia period to the Warring States period are divided into two cultures. The earlier Xingcheng culture is subdivided into an early phase and a late phase according to the stratigraphic sequence of the Xingcheng site, while the later Liutingdong culture is also divided into an early phase and a late phase based on the stratigraphic relationships of the Wudong site. Finally, through vertical chronological comparison, the Tumen River basin is divided into four stages: the Xia to early Shang period (early Xingcheng culture); the late Shang period (late Xingcheng culture); the Western Zhou to Spring and Autumn period (early Liutingdong culture); and the Warring States period (late Liutingdong culture).
