Staging and Chronology of Archaeological Cultures in North Liaodong
摘要
The fifth chapter focuses on the staging and chronology of archaeological cultures in northern Liaodong. Its innovative contribution lies in the first-time inclusion of several previously identified remains in this region—namely, the so-called “Upper Xinle culture” of Shenyang, the “Shunshantun type” of Kangping, the “Wanliu remains” of Faku, and the “Wanghua remains” of Fushun—into the category of the Machengzi culture through rigorous argumentation. It is pointed out that these remains are actually part of the Machengzi culture, which serves as a collective designation for archaeological cultural remains of the Xia and Shang periods in northern Liaodong. Based on an analysis and comparison of stratigraphic relationships and artifact co-occurrence patterns, the Machengzi culture and the Shuangfang culture in this region are divided into five stages: the early Xia and Shang periods (early Machengzi culture); the late Shang period (late Machengzi culture); the Western Zhou period (early Shuangfang culture); the Spring and Autumn period (middle Shuangfang culture); and the Warring States period (late Shuangfang culture).
