Investigation on Mechanical Properties of AA6061 Metal Matrix Composite Reinforced with Particulate Titanium Carbide (TiC)

Due to advancement in technologies there is always a requirement to develop a new material having better mechanical properties at low cost. Metals and alloys are found to be most suitable for making a component for different applications like automobile, aerospace, marine etc. and their properties can be enhance by adding reinforcement such as aluminium oxide (Al2O3), titanium diboride (TiB2), boron carbide (B4C), silicon carbide (SiC), titanium carbide (TiC),cetc. This paper is an experimental work to investigate the mechanical properties of AA6061 reinforced with titanium carbide (TiC) particulates having average particle size (APS) 2 micron. In this work, AA6061 act as matrix metal and TiC particulates as the reinforcement to fabricate AMMC by stir casting process. In present investigation the TiCp are added in varying proportions of 0%, 2%, 4%, 6% and 8% by weight to the AA6061.The results shows that with increased percentage of TiCp properties UTS, compressive strength and hardness increases but percent elongation and impact energy decreases. Fractography analysis indicates that the failure of the specimen is a combination of dimple ductile and brittle fracture.
