Introduction to Bioinformatics: Past, Present and Future

Biology is a science that explores life. It produces a wide range of data due to its descriptive nature, covering everything from an organism’s size and state to its genetic makeup. The increasing use of gene sequencing and biotechnological techniques has led to a remarkable surge in biological data. This has emphasized the importance of effectively managing, processing, and analyzing this data. To address these challenges, scientists developed bioinformatics—an interdisciplinary field that combines biology, computer science, mathematics, statistics, information science, and engineering to analyze complex biological data sets. Bioinformatics leverages computational methods for in silico analysis of biological questions, facilitating deeper insights and discoveries. The integration of bioinformatics, big data technologies, cloud computing, machine learning, and AI is revolutionizing our understanding of biology and medicine, presenting new opportunities to address global health challenges such as infectious diseases and pandemics. This book chapter examines the evolution of bioinformatics as a multidisciplinary field, highlighting key resources, web tools, and its applications across various domains.
