Introduction to Mechatronics

The term ‘mechatronics’ refers to a pivotal interface between mechanics and electronics. It is fundamentally a synergistic approach to engineering, where the traditional differences among mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering are blurred, resulting in innovative solutions that best utilize the strengths of each discipline. Mechatronics engineers build inventive solutions that integrate mechanical components with electronic and software systems to create and develop useful and efficient products. This introductory chapter will illustrate how mechatronics acts as a multidisciplinary field that smoothly combines mechanics, electronics, and computation. This chapter will also highlight the historical evolution of mechatronics and demonstrate how mechatronics has become an essential element of modern engineering. This chapter will further focus on the foundational concepts of mechatronics, including analog and digital electronics, microprocessors, and microprocessor interfaces to electromechanical systems, as well as the interdisciplinary nature of the subject.
