Air Quality Dynamics in North India

Air pollution is an urgent environmental problem with far-reaching consequences for public health, ecosystems, and climate change. This chapter provides an overview of the current state of air pollution in North India and highlights its major sources. India, a rapidly developing country, faces serious challenges in managing air quality due to a combination of industrialization, urbanization, vehicular emissions, and agricultural practices. Major cities in Delhi, UP, and Haryana consistently experience high levels of air pollutants such as particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and ozone. The health consequences of air pollution in India are alarming, contributing to respiratory diseases, cardiovascular problems, and other adverse health effects. Vulnerable groups of the population, including children and the elderly, are particularly at risk. In addition, air pollution has harmful effects on the environment, leading to soil and water contamination, loss of biodiversity, and climate change. Several key sources contribute to India’s air pollution crisis, including emissions from automobiles, industrial activities, biomass burning, and construction dust. Addressing these sources requires a multifaceted approach involving policy interventions, technological advances, and public awareness campaigns.
