Exploring the Role of Physiotherapists in Disaster Management

  • Maman Paul

摘要

In recent years, disasters and their responses have gained significant attention. The field of disaster physical rehabilitation is relatively new and not much evidence is available. Additionally, most studies in this area are based on personal experiences. Physical rehabilitation, as a discipline, can have a significant impact on humanitarian aid efforts provided during disaster management. The success of physical rehabilitation services depends entirely on the timing of their implementation; however the significance of providing timely services during disasters is not well understood. The global demand for rehabilitation lacks sufficient data. In disasters and emergencies, some injured individuals develop short- or long-term disabilities due to inadequate injury treatment. Common injuries in disaster-affected individuals, such as bone fractures, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, amputations, peripheral nerve injuries, and burns, can lead to physical or cognitive limitations. This review suggests incorporating physical rehabilitation interventions into health-care system response plans during disasters and emergencies.
