Genome Editing for Trait-Specific Improvement in Rice
摘要
Rapid advances in genome editing technology have revolutionized agriculture by giving precise tools for trait-specific crop improvement. As a staple food for a substantial fraction of the world’s population, rice is among the most important crops. This comprehensive chapter explores the complex landscape of genome editing in rice, elucidating the scientific principles of cutting-edge techniques, including CRISPR-Cas9, TALENs and ZFNs and their potential for revolutionizing pest/disease resistance, abiotic stress tolerance, nutritional enrichment, yield optimization and quality enhancement. Furthermore, genome editing facilitates the development of rice varieties that thrive in diverse environmental conditions, displaying increased tolerance to drought, salinity and temperature extremes. The nutritional landscape of rice is also in position for transformation, as genome editing enables the elevation of essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids, addressing global malnutrition challenges. Beyond productivity, genome editing tailors rice to consumers’ preferences by enhancing grain quality attributes like aroma, texture and cooking properties. This chapter also provides comprehensive knowledge of how genome editing transforms rice agriculture and contributes to global food security by addressing the scientific, ethical, and regulatory components.
