Fast-Forward Breeding in Rice

Rice, a fundamental crop and vital staple food worldwide, stands at the junction of numerous global challenges. With the planet undergoing rapid environmental changes and the global population steadily increasing, there is an urgency to harness the full potential of rice production—in terms of both quantity and quality. Sustainable expansion of crop production systems is necessary to provide food for the growing human population. Progress in genome sequencing technologies, combined with efficient methods for identifying desirable traits, accelerates the availability of advantageous genetic elements for breeding and research. Fast-forward breeding (FFB) in rice introduces a groundbreaking approach that expedites the traditional breeding process by integrating cutting-edge technologies and innovative methods. FFB in rice represents a revolutionary method that employs genomics, molecular biology, and data-driven techniques to expedite the development of improved rice varieties with enhanced characteristics, such as increased yields, resistance to environmental stress, and improved nutritional content. The adoption of FFB has the potential to tackle global food security challenges by delivering more robust and productive rice crops, although it necessitates responsible consideration of regulatory and ethical concerns in its implementation. This chapter explores the innovative concept of “Fast Forward Breeding” in rice breeding and showcases examples where this approach has resulted in the development of high-yielding, disease-resistant, and climate-resilient rice varieties. Additionally, it addresses the critical significance of maintaining genetic diversity and preserving landraces in the pursuit of sustainable rice breeding.
