Understanding wind properties is very important in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) during extreme weather such as monsoons, typhoons, thunderstorms, and so on for the safety of human life and property. The study of wind flow and turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer is not only a direct interest of meteorological science researchers but also for wind engineering researchers depending on different scales i.e., mesoscale and microscale. This chapter focuses on wind characteristics associated with the turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer during severe storms and will discuss key aspects for both the research communities. Extreme weather that may bring strong wind and turbulence structure inside the ABL are discussed in detail. Chapter contents are divided into four sections: Sect. 1 Introduction, Sect. 2 Wind Speed during a severe storm, Sect. 3 Mean Wind Speed in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer, Sect. 4 Turbulence Characteristics of Wind Speed. Geostrophic wind and gradient wind, mean wind speed in the ABL, the discrepancy in mean wind speed during severe storms like typhoons, downbursts, tornados, and its turbulent structure inside the ABL, variation of wind speed concerning height above the ground surface, including a description of turbulence intensity, the integral scale of turbulence, power spectrum, and their variations with wind speed, are discussed in detail. Along with this, Typhoon Kai-Tak is mentioned as an illustration of a strong wind event to express the wind characteristics of strong winds.
