Review of Types of Deployable Mechanisms

A deployable structure develops into a fully or partially functional one from a small, closed configuration. This phenomenon is achieved with the help of structural mechanisms capable of having extensive translations, rotations and deformations. These structures find their major applications in retractable roofs/facades and space structures. This paper explores various structural mechanisms for deployment. Many of these structural mechanisms find their origins in ancient Japanese origami. Various patterns relating to Origami are discussed in the paper. Kutzbach-Grubler’s equation gives the mobility of a structure. In certain structures, there is single-degree-of-freedom movement despite mobility being zero. This is described as a kinematic paradox in the literature which leads to mechanisms described as overconstrained linkages. Several overconstrained linkages have been discussed in the paper. The overconstrained linkages are however tedious, to understand and implement. Bar linkages of other types having a high degree of deployability are also discussed. These are known as pantographic linkages. Different types of pantographic linkages are discussed in the paper. These mechanisms in general provide dynamic solutions to modern problems.
