Bioconversion of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) into Bioethanol

摘要

The bioconversion of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) into bioethanol has emerged as an environmentally friendly and economically viable solution for the valorization of this abundant waste stream. POME, a by-product of the palm oil industry, has been a major environmental concern due to its high organic content and potential to cause water pollution. However, recent advancements in biotechnology have enabled the conversion of POME into bioethanol, a renewable and sustainable biofuel with great economic potential. This study explores the economic feasibility of bioethanol production from POME and examines the bioconversion steps involved in the process. The first crucial step is the pretreatment of POME to enhance its biodegradability and reduce inhibitory compounds. Various pretreatment methods, such as physical, chemical and biological treatment, have shown promising results in improving the overall efficiency of POME conversion. Subsequently, hydrolysis is employed to break down complex carbohydrates present in POME into fermentable sugars and finally the fermentation process where the fermentable sugars are converted into ethanol by specific microorganisms. The unique characteristics of each method involved in the process are discussed, and the comparisons among the studies are critically reviewed. Additionally, the challenges and future prospects of POME conversion into bioethanol are explored. Ultimately, this waste-to-biofuel conversion holds the promise of addressing environmental concerns, curbing greenhouse gas emissions and improving the overall sustainability of the palm oil industry.
