摘要

This paper examines the association between family socioeconomic status (SES) and the academic performance of school student. This study finds that gender and parents’ educational status are significantly associated with students’ academic accomplishment. However, no significant association could be established between the SES factors such as caste, place of residence (rural/urban), parents’ occupational status, family size, and annual family income with the academic performance of the students. The performance of female students is found significantly superior to that of the male students, and the children of educated parents, particularly educated mothers, perform significantly better than the ones whose parents/mothers were illiterate. This study highlights the importance of government initiatives such as establishing special school to support the educational needs of students from rural areas and deprived sections of society.
