Intelligent Real-Time Driver Alert System: Preventing Accidents Through Drowsiness Detection

Fatigue and microsleep while driving are usually the main causes of most severe road accidents. In most cases, a road accident happens mainly due to the drowsiness of the person sitting in the driver’s seat or low visibility on the route. The proposed system focuses on detecting the driver’s drowsiness based on his behavioral measures using an intelligent system. Computer vision and machine learning techniques have been used to create an economical and real-time system to alert the driver in case he/she feels drowsy. Numerous facial features such as eye blinks and yawning have been extracted from the face to derive drowsiness based on adaptive and real-time thresholding. The system also alerts the driver to assure a safe distance, if suddenly an obstacle comes in front of the vehicle due to low visibility mainly in foggy and rainy seasons.
