Studies on Wicking of Fabrics with Air Jet Textured Yarns

The air jet texturing technique has emerged as an important economical process in the textile industry. Due to the unique features of air jet textured yarns, in this research study, an attempt has been made to manufacture apparel fabrics with air jet textured yarns and to study their wicking characteristics which is one of the important thermophysiological comfort property of the fabrics. The performance of fabrics manufactured from air jet textured yarns is compared with 100% cotton clothing concerning wicking properties. Eighteen fabrics were manufactured by use of full factorial experiment. Polyester air jet textured yarns were used in the weft direction and cotton yarn was used in the warp way for fabric production. 100% cotton fabric was also produced for the comparison purpose. The warp of 2/80 s cotton yarn was constant for all samples. The fabrics were manufactured by using three different weaves such as plain, 2/1 twill, and 5 end satin with three levels of pick densities such as 24, 28 and 32 picks per cm. The test results of wicking were analyzed statistically by use of Minitab software. Performance of produced woven fabrics were assessed and compared with cotton fabrics with respect to wicking characteristics. It has been concluded, from this research study that, yarn type, weave and pick density influences wicking of fabrics. Cotton/polyester air jet textured yarn fabric combination shows higher wicking height. Satin shows higher wickability in both warp and weft ways. An increase in pick density led to lower wickability. The interaction also shows similar results and ANOVA shows that all the parameters are highly significant.
