Kaposi’s Sarcoma Associated Herpes Virus

Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus is another name for human herpesvirus 8. This virus is an oncogenic virus that is a member of the Herpesviridae family. There are two phases to the viral cycle: a brief lytic phase and a latency phase that causes a permanent infection in target cells and the production of a few genes, such as v-FLIP, v-cyclin, and LANA-1. The seroprevalence and risk factors of infection vary globally, and saliva seems to play a major role in the transmission of viruses. Kaposi’s sarcoma in all of its epidemiological forms, classic, endemic, iatrogenic, epidemic, and non-epidemic, contains KSHV. KSHV primarily exists in a dormant state in a Kaposi’s sarcoma lesion, but less than 5% of virus particles are replicative and have been linked to the possible growth of nearby cells, indicating that they play important roles in the carcinogenesis process. Kaposi’s sarcoma is caused by KSHV-encoded oncogenic proteins that can alter cellular pathways to produce features common to all cancers, such as immune escape, angiogenesis, inflammation, and stimulation of cell proliferation. These proteins are also involved in the development of apoptosis. There are still significant questions, nevertheless, particularly regarding the precise pathways of transmission, variations in KSHV seroprevalence, and the global frequency of Kaposi’s sarcoma. We summarized here the most recent data on the genome, replication, seroprevalence, structure, diversification, and lytic and latent oncogenesis proteins of the KSHV virus that cause Kaposi’s sarcoma. Finally, we discussed the viral, immunological, and environmental variables that may be linked to KSHV transmission and that may also influence the course of Kaposi’s sarcoma.
