Cancers Associated with Epstein-Barr Virus

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a diverse cancer-causing virus, influencing around 90% of people worldwide. It is also connected to cancers related to both hematopoietic and epithelial cells. The spread of the virus is primarily by mouth secretions; however, spread by organ replacement and blood transfusion has also been stated. EBV develops latent infection in B-cells—there, it shows expression of specific group of proteins known as EBV transcription programs, having six nuclear antigens, three latent membrane proteins, and EBV encoded RNA. These viral proteins have demonstrated efficiency to alter B-cells to lymphoblastic cells. These proteins show varied expression that regulates the incidence of different forms of viral latency in the pathogenesis of a specific type of cancer.
