Introduction

Émile Durkheim was a pioneering French sociologist who has made lasting contributions to modern sociology. This chapter introduces the book on a renewed appreciation of his seminal contributions from a unique point of view, namely, the relation between individual and society or, more technically, between individual personality and social solidarity.
