Architectural Comparison of VLIW and Superscalar Processors

Over the last several decades, there has been tremendous advancement in the field of computer architectures where the main driving force has been improved performance and efficiency. Very Long Instruction Word (VLIW) and Superscalar processors are well-known rivals in this evolution where the focus has been on exploiting instruction-level parallelism. Our aim in this work is to study the two architectures of VLIW and superscalar architectures, delving into their distinctions. The study compares their performance characteristics and pros and cons by examining quantitative metrics in terms of speed and bandwidth. The VLIW architecture attributes a higher clock rate but heavily depends on compiler technology for achieving improved performance. On the other hand, superscalar processors utilize dynamic instruction scheduling and out-of-order execution, enhancing memory bandwidth utilization and storage efficiency. This comprehensive analysis elucidates the trade-offs between VLIW and superscalar architectures across diverse computational requirements.
