Medicinal and Nutritional Importance of Amorphophallus campanulatus in Human Health

Elephant foot yam, or Amorphophallus campanulatus, has been the focus of numerous studies by examining its pharmacological, nutritional, and phytochemical characteristics. Amorphophallus campanulatus contains tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, steroids, and phenol as phytoconstituents. Because of its antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, hepatoprotective, anticancer, cytotoxic, and immunomodulatory qualities, it has several potential applications. This has led to its use in the treatment of various ailments. Its functions are aided by the presence of phytochemicals including gallic acid, hexadecanoic acid, amblyone, and β-sitosterol. Moreover, the plant’s corms have demonstrated encouraging anti-hyperglycaemic properties; in mice given glucose, the methanol extract inhibited writhing and decreased blood glucose levels. Given that it contains multiple nutraceutical ingredients; it makes obvious that this tuber would play a significant part in the traditional Ayurvedic medicinal system. A person’s welfare may be enhanced by using this tuber in a balanced diet. It is a nutritious food that is high in vital nutrients and low in calories. This chapter throws light on the various medical and nutritional uses.
