Medicinal and Nutritional Importance of Cichorium intybus in Human Health
摘要
Chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) is well-known for its therapeutic benefits. This plant is abundant in various nutrients and bioactive substances, including inulin, flavonoids, and polyphenols. Chicory offers many health benefits that include hepatoprotective effects, due to the phytochemicals like cichorioside and esculetin which make it a promising natural remedy for liver ailments. Additionally, chicory’s role in diabetes management is notable, with its inulin content influencing glucose metabolism and chicoric acid promoting insulin secretion and its sensitization. Moreover, chicory exhibits potent anti-inflammatory properties, supported by sesquiterpene lactones, making it valuable in addressing conditions like gingival inflammation and immune system modulation. Its robust antioxidant activity, curtailing from flavonoids, phenolic acids, and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives, further enhances its therapeutic efficacy by combating oxidative stress-related damage. Furthermore, chicory revealed significant antibacterial and antifungal efficacy, highlighting its potential as a natural antimicrobial agent. Overall, the diverse health benefits and therapeutic activities of Cichorium intybus underscore its potential as a compelling natural remedy for various health conditions, offering promise for liver health, diabetes management, inflammation alleviation, and oxidative stress mitigation. This chapter aims to comprehensively explore the medicinal properties and therapeutic potential of Cichorium intybus L. It specifically aims to investigate its hepatoprotective effects, role in diabetes management, anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial efficacy. Based on the existing literature, this chapter aims to explain the potential mechanisms through which Cichorium intybus influences insulin secretion and the associated signaling pathways involved in glucose metabolism.
